1. You don’t know how to use WordPress at all or don’t understand some of the pieces?

I can provide one-on-one or group teaching of WordPress use and administration.

Widgits and plugins explained. Securing your site from hacking. The difference between pages and posts, and which do you use when. SSL and demystifying the padlock in the address bar. Changing and customizing themes. Updating WordPress, plugins, and themes.

All this and more explained with the least amount of technical jargon possible. If you want to do all your website maintenance yourself I can get you to that level.

Additionally I can create videos specific to your website showing you exactly how to perform certain functions.

2. Are you procrastinating the process of buying a domain name and a hosting package?

I can be with you through the process of buying a domain name, finding a host for your website, setting up your site and installing WordPress. If you aren’t sure what you need or don’t need, what all those options mean, or simply have hesitation about the whole process since you’ve never done it before I can guide you, advise you, and make it as painless as possible.

3. Have no idea how to organize your site?

I can ask the right questions and occasionally provide a spark of inspiration when it comes to the organization of your site. If you think setting up WordPress is difficult just wait until you start trying to figure out what to put on your website and where to put it.

4. Do you need specific functions that aren’t built into WordPress?

Your web site needs to do things not just look pretty. I can recommend and research plugins which will provide specific functions you need your site to perform.

5. Wondering how to make your site look the way you want it to look?

Now that your website can do things it needs to look pretty. What you site looks like and some of what it can do is controlled by the theme. I can demystify themes and give you guidance on selection and customization.

6. What if something breaks or blows up?

Things go wrong. You might even get the White Screen of Death. If you haven’t backed up your site and/or database it might all be gone forever.

I can show you how to backup your file system and your database and explain the difference between the two. Your hosting company may have built in backup tools as well. I can show you how to access and use those.

If your site has crashed and burned I can attempt to recover it for you.

7. What if you don’t want to do all of this updating and backing up yourself?

I offer maintenance plan packages. I will update WordPress, plugins and your theme for you plus create and keep backups of your file system and database.

8. And if you need a website but don’t have the time or interest in doing all the construction yourself?

I can build the site for you and customize it to look and work as desired – within the limits of reason and technology that is.

9. What if you don’t live in the Rapid City area?

I can help you with your site remotely. It’s the internet after all. Location matters almost nothing when it comes to running a web site.

10. What if you have an existing website that needs updating, changing or a whole rebuild?

I can migrate your current content over to WordPress. If you have WordPress I can refresh the look and function.

What can I not do?

1. I do not do SEO.

I am not an SEO expert and don’t attempt to pretend I am. If you are going to invest money in SEO find someone who only does SEO and knows what they are doing. I am not that person.

2. I can not write copy for your website.

What ever field of knowledge you are building a website to support it’s a fact that I know less about that field than you do. I can’t write for you. I can put your writing on the site. I can show you how to put your writing on the site. But you have to write it.

3. I do not write code.

Oh I can do basic HTML and CSS. I can even muddle my way through a few lines of PHP. But I am not a coder. If you need serious coding done I may be able to find the person to work with you on that. If coding is needed for a project we are working on together I have trusted people I can outsource that to.
