Account Notice : Error № 7917 – Bluehost Scam Alert
Did you get an email that looks like this?
Me too. So have my clients. Don’t click the link. Don’t panic. It’s just a scam.
The first clue that this is a scam is when it says you need to solve your problem of too many directories by creating another directory. Your hosting company may contact you if you have what they consider to be too many files on the server but they will not ask you to create a special temp directory – because that will not solve the problem. They will ask you to remove any files which are not directly associated with your site. Or they will try to sell you the next higher level of hosting service.
The second clue this is a scam is that nothing in the email is trying to sell you the next level of hosting service. I’ve gotten one legitimate email from Bluehost telling me one of my sites was using too many resources on the server. They didn’t threaten to cancel my account. They did try to sell me a more powerful hosting package.
That email also came from a real person – the email address was his name at bluehost dot com. Not clients02 at my dot bluehost dot com.
Next, look at where the link points. While it claims to point to alert dot bluehost dot com there is no such thing. Bluehost does have a server status site here: https://www.bluehost.com/cgi/serverstatus
If you look at the email message source code you will see this:
The link actually points you to a .ru domain. And nothing good will come from that.
